"I think I became a sculptor
at mid-life because I had always been a very serious
child.
Of
course, this resulted in a very limited amount of time
for me to play in the dirt and mud.
In junior high school, I was
advised that, really, it was a bad idea for me to try
art seriously. I was once told by a teacher that, “Not
only is it not smart for boys to become artists, you are
not any good at it.”
Then, at 40, everything
changed.
I
visited a sculpture class and fell in love with the
process.
Until then, I had never realized that art was not about
finishing the piece. It is totally about enjoying the
process of making the piece.
From that moment, I found
that there is nothing I prefer to do more than create
sculpture.
In truth, there is nothing to making sculpture but
having fun playing in the mud.
And, in addition, playing with some wonderful
other toys like hammers, chisels, saws, power equipment,
hot wax, mold making materials and foundries.
For me, it was clear.
I had to retire from the world of commerce, and
play in the mud for the rest of my life.
In this process of creating,
I discovered that Art is a wonderful voice for all the
things I needed to say, but never could.
I love sculpting with a passion."
